1/16/12
8th grade Percussion

All-Region Music

Once school starts we will begin working diligently through the All-Region music for this fall. The music consists of:

  • Snare Drum
  • 2 mallet marimba
  • Timpani

All students will be required to perform a portion of the All-Region music for a grade each week.

It will not be “hard” or “difficult”, but
it will take time for you to dedicate to intentionally practicing and MASTERING the music. Please go ahead and plan on spending some time each week IN THE BAND HALL* (not your house) playing marimba and timpani. Just a 5-10 minutes every day is better than nothing.

Obviously, you can spend a good deal of time at home learning the Snare Drum piece on your practice pad. You should also become familiar with playing that piece on a real Snare Drum, too.

Mr. Mathew will provide recordings of the music when school starts. This will be with a metronome click at various tempos. Please load these into your iPod or other music player and play along with it. This is a fantastic way to make sure that you are learning the music correctly!

*unless you have your own marimba and timpani at home :)

Audition Dates

All-City Auditions
November 1
includes all middle schools in Mesquite

All Region Auditions
November 12
includes all middle schools in Mesquite, Rockwall, Forney, Terrell, and others

Daily preparation and hitting small goals is the best way to MASTER the music for these auditions.

The auditions are “blind” auditions, meaning the judging panel will not be able to see the performer while playing. Therefore, it is imperative (that means it is a “must”) that you SOUND your absolute best. Your sound is ALWAYS the most important thing!

You will be playing in front of other students who are also auditioning. If you are the kind of person who gets nervous playing in front of other people, then the best way to get better at or “over” that fear is to prepare well and play in front of other people a lot. Get used to standing up and playing in front of others.
