H. Scott Rives
H. Scott Rives is a graduate of Woodward High School in Woodward, Oklahoma, and received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 2002. While at ULM, he performed French horn in numerous university ensembles, including the Monroe Symphony Orchestra, and studied with Dr. Rebecca Dodson-Webster, Mr. Steven Pederson, Dr. Derle Long, and Mr. Jack White.
Mr. Rives began his teaching career in Monroe, Louisiana, serving as Assistant Band Director at Ouachita Parish High School and Ouachita Parish Junior High. In 2003, he joined Dr. John D. Horn High School in Mesquite, Texas, as Associate Director of Bands. During his twelve years at JHHS, his ensembles consistently earned UIL Sweepstakes awards.
In 2015, Mr. Rives joined North Mesquite High School as Associate Band Director, where he conducted the Wind Symphony and Concert II Band. Both ensembles experienced continued success, earning UIL Sweepstakes awards and numerous festival honors. He was named Band Director of the Big Blue Band in 2019.
Under Mr. Rives' leadership, the Big Blue Band has reached several significant milestones. In 2023, the band qualified for and performed at the Texas State Marching Contest for the first time in school history. The 2024 Big Blue Band won the Area C Marching Contest and returned to the Texas State Marching Contest, followed by another state appearance by the 2025 ensemble.
Mr. Rives earned his Master of Education in Administration from East Texas A&M University in 2010. He is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association and the Texas Bandmasters Association. He resides in Rockwall, Texas, with his two children, Addison and Holden.
